Field racing is based on the original competition between greyhounds, two greyhounds paired against each other. In times past, greyhounds were awarded points for speed out of slips, turning the hare, etc. Now, there are 8,16 or 32 dog races, with dogs paired off, with the winner progressing to the next round until 2 dogs remain, these then run off against each other to determine the winner of the race. To identify each pair, one dog wears a red collar whilst it's opponent wears a white collar, they are released simultaneously by a "slipper" using a lead with 2 collars attached.(see photo above) The dogs race over 300m and it is a test of speed and stamina, to win a 16 dog event, a dog must race 4 times in one day. The most prestigious event conducted is the Waterloo Cup, an event which has a history dating back 100 years.
Field racing is a viable alternative to circle racing, it provides
a "different" scene for the jaded dog, is a safe environment for a dog
returning from injury and more importantly provides a good learning environment
for young pups.
