BRING BACK THE BUTTERFLIES CAMPAIGN

The campaign, which has been in the making with hard work over the last several years, was officially launched on the 16th of August 2007 at the Wittunga Botanic Gardens, Blackwood. Despite the rain and fog the opening was well attended and the weather lifted at a moment describable only as propitious when Jan Forrest opened the proceedings. Chris Daniels, Professor of Urban Ecology, University of South Australia, then delivered an excellent address which sent the campaign formally on its way. To access this address click here.

A group of students from the Blackwood Primary School were then invited to become gardeners with a variety of plants which have relevance as the foodplants for several species of butterfly.

An excellent morning tea was then served on the balcony of the Wittunga Homestead for all those who had braved the elements earlier in the morning. The first picture below left shows Chris Daniels with Jan Forrest, secretary of the Butterfly Conservation South Australia and David Keane its president. BUTTERFLY SITES

To encourage organisations such as schools, councils etc to develop sites with the specific purpose of providing an environment for the propagation of local indigenous butterfly species, both the larval stage as well as the adult form, The BCSA will register the sites and provide a sign which can be displayed on the sites. The signs are coated aluminium designed to be graffiti proof, measure 300x300 mm and are reasonably permanent. Holes are provided for mounting screws. Thebook 'Attracting butterflies to your garden' is now available from members of Butterfly Conservation SA, the Museum shop and some book stores.

It is superbly illustrated with butterfly photos from the Lindsay F Hunt and Robert H Fisher collections as well as images from a number of well known plant professionals.

The recommended retail price is $29.95. If, however, friends groups, landcare and other conservation and garden clubs would like to order 10 or more books directly from Butterfly Conservation SA Inc. for your members, we will make them available to you for $25 per book.
